H.H. Smith & Sons is fully committed to training & developing employee skills at all levels and maintain all operative qualifications & training up to and in excess of the required standards.
Aside from ongoing Safety, Health & Environmental training, H.H. Smith has an active training programme for new skills and refresher training, which ensures all employees are competent to complete tasks safely and efficiently on site, which in turn is beneficial for the Company, Clients and Employees.
The Company invests in trade qualifications and professional development for all staff members, as well as providing work placements for young adults of school age where appropriate. Currently on our contracts we have young adults of all ages going through our CITB approved training scheme.
The following is a summary of standard training which H.H. Smith employees undertake;
General Awareness Training (Asbestos & Manual)
All H.H. Smith site operatives have attended Manual Handling & Asbestos Awareness Training. Any new employee will attend similar awareness courses.
CSCS H&S Test
All H.H. Smith site operatives undertake the CSCS H&S test, and it is the company aim for all employees to have blue or gold craft CSCS cards. Currently over 95% of employees have this.
SMSTS / SSSTS (Site Management / Supervisor Safety Training Scheme)
All Site Managers must attend the 5 day SMSTS course, and site supervisors must hold the SSSTS qualification.
First Aid at work
H.H. Smith currently has over 30% of the workforce trained as First Aiders.
All H.H. Smith Site Managers have completed a NVQ in Site Management, and all appropriate site staff undertake either level 2 and / or Level 3 NVQ in their respective trades.
Plant CPCS/ NVQ
H.H. Smith has many in-house plant operators who are trained to NVQ level for various plant, ranging from dumpers, telescopic Handler, excavator and rollers.
All current management staff are expected to gain professional qualifications in their respective roles. Existing staff have been supported through degree qualifications in both Quantity and Building Surveying. Operationally, management staff are trained and updated in current construction practices such as BIM, NEC3 and Microsoft Project. This ensures skills and competencies for H.H. Smith’s management is current and relevant.
